Reset – Week 9

 

Reset: To set, adjust or fix in a new or different way 

 

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 NKJV

 

“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation. Whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13 NLT 

 

“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:12-13 NIV

THE SECRET TO CONTENTMENT

 

 THE SECRET SAUCE 

 

“This is why I tell you to never be worried about your life, for all that you need will be provided, such as food, water, clothing - everything your body needs. Isn’t there more to your life than a meal? Isn’t your body more than clothing? Look at all the birds – do you think they worry about their existence? They don’t plant or reap or store up food, yet your Heavenly Father provides them each with food. Aren’t you much more valuable to your Father than they?” Matthew 6:25-26 TPT

 

REGARDLESS OF MY CIRCUMSTANCES, MY POSSESSIONS, OR MY STATUS, I KNOW THAT I AM A CHILD OF GOD WHO LOVES ME, CARES FOR ME AND WILL PROVIDE EVERYTHING I NEED FOR ALL THAT HE DESIRES ME TO DO FOREVER

FOUR TRUTHS TO DEVELOPING AN ATTITUDE OF CONTENTMENT 

 

  1. AN ATTITUDE OF CONTENTMENT HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH CIRCUMSTANCES

 

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” Philippians 4:11 NIV 

 

“Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace…a mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.” Acts 16:19,22-24 NLT

 

“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and signing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” Acts 16:25 NLT

 

“Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!” Acts 16:26 NLT

 

  1. YOUR ATTITUDE CAN CHANGE, JUST LIKE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

 

“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want” Philippians 4:12 NIV 

 

YOUR ATTITUDE IS YOUR CHOICE 

 

“After they were severely beaten, they were thrown into prison and the jailer was commanded to guard them securely. So the jailer placed them in the innermost cell of the prison and had their feet bound and chained. Paul and Silas, undaunted, prayed in the middle of the night and sang songs of praise to God…” Acts 16:23-25 TPT 

 

UNDAUNTED: undismayed; not discouraged; not forced to abandon purpose or effort

 

UNDAUNTED: not at all afraid or worried about dealing with something, especially something that would frighten or worry most people.

 

JESUS 

 

  1. AN ATTITUDE OF CONTENTMENT CAN BE DEVELOPED IF WE RELY ON THE SECRET SAUCE 

 

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 NKJV

 

“…My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am made strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NLT

GOD CAN BREAK THE CHAINS OF YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN YOU LEAN ON HIS STRENGTH RATHER THAN YOUR OWN

 

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO WITNESS TO OTHERS IS BY HOW YOU RESPOND TO ADVERSITY

 

  1. AN ATTITUDE OF CONTENTMENT WILL REMIND YOU WHO GOD CREATED YOU TO BE NOT WHO YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO AFFECT YOU TO BE

 

“…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Romans 8:37 NIV

 

WHEN I STARTED ACTING LIKE A 1480

WHEN YOUR REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST, YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES, BOTH PAST AND PRESENT, DON’T HAVE TO DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE

ANYTHING OR ANYONE DIFFERENT CAN BE DIFFICULT

 

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12:18 ESV

 

THREE HINDRANCES OF CONFLICT

  • HINDERS MY CONNECTION WITH GOD

…Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 NLT

  • HINDERS MY PRAYERS

In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together… Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7 NLT

  • HINDERS MY HAPPINESS

So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. Romans 8:6 NLT

 

HOW DO WE HAVE HEALTHY CONFRONTATION? 

 

1. WE MUST VALUE THE PERSON

 

I love you and long to see you, dear friends, for you are my joy and the crown I receive for my work. Philippians 4:1 NLT

 

The LORD doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

 

SEEING VALUE IN PEOPLE IS NOT ABOUT THEIR VALUE TO YOU, BUT THEIR VALUE TO GOD.

 

YOU ARE FIGHTING FOR THEM NOT AGAINST THEM!

 

If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave. Matthew 10:14

 

2. YOU CAN’T SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG

 

Now I appeal to Euodia and Syntyche. Please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreement. And I ask you, my true partner, to help these two women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the Good News. Philippians 4:2-3 NLT

 

  • DON’T ADDRESS IN AN EMOTIONAL STATE

Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 2 Timothy 2:23-24 NLT

 

GIVE ENOUGH TIME FOR EMOTIONS TO SUBSIDE, BUT NOT ENOUGH FOR ANIMOSITIES TO BUILD

  • DON’T ADDRESS IN PUBLIC
  • DON’T TALK ABOUT THE PERSON. TALK TO THE PERSON.

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.  James 1:26 NLT

 

A gossip goes around telling secrets, so don’t hang around with chatterers. Proverbs 20:19 NLT

 

A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.  Proverbs 16:28 NLT

 

A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence. Proverbs 11:13 NLT

 

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29 NLT

 

3. LISTEN FOR THE HURT

 

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19

 

HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE.

 

THE SOLUTION ALWAYS BEGINS WITH UNDERSTANDING

 

For we must bear the “burden” of being considerate of the doubts and fears of others… Romans 15:2 TLB

 

You cannot effectively move toward conflict resolution until each participate experiences for themselves to be fully heard with regard to their perspective-what they want and why” -Jim Melamed

 

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Philippians 2:4-5

 

WHEN YOU ACTIVELY LISTEN EMOTIONS DROP AND THE TRUTH COMES OUT.

 

4. ADMIT YOUR PART OF THE CONFLICT

 

DON’T TRADE AWAY YOUR INTEGRITY FOR JUSTIFICATION

 

“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. Matthew 7:3;5

 

5. WE MUST FORGIVE PEOPLE

 

Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.  -Anne Lamont 

 

Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Hebrews 12:15

 

UNFORGIVENESS WILL HARBOR RESENTMENT AND THAT WILL TURN INTO BITTERNESS

 

UNFORGIVENESS, BITTERNESS, RESENTMENT HAS NO AUTHORITY IN MY LIFE AND THE ANTIDOTE IS FORGIVENESS….

 

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34

 

Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.” Matthew 18:32-35 NLT

Reset: To set, adjust or fix in a new or different way

 

“I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done for me. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3:7-14 NLT

CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS, CAN’T LOSE

 

WHAT IS YOUR FOCUS?

 

“I said to myself, “Come on, lets try pleasure. Let’s look for the “good things” in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless. So I said, “laughter is silly. What good does it doo to seek pleasure?” After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine. And while still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world. I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful vineyards. I made gardens and parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees. I build reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many flourishing groves. I bought slaves, both men and women, and others were born into my household. I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me. I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire! YOUR LEVEL OF HONESTY DETERMINES YOUR LEVEL OF GROWTH

 

WHAT YOU OWN ISN’T A PROBLEM UNTIL IT OWNS YOU

 

“But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless – like chasing the wind.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT

 

  1. WHAT DO I NOT WANT?

 

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ” Philippians 3:7-8 NIV

 

  1. WHAT DO I WANT?

 

“…That I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ – yes to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the from the dead.” Philippians 3:9-11 NIV

 

“…Ive dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ – God’s righteousness. I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself. If there was any way to get in on the resurrection from the dead, I wanted to do it.” Philippians 3:9-11 MSG.

 

THE FRIENDS YOU KNOW BEST ARE THE ONES YOU SPEND THE MOST TIME WITH

 

“When I think of all this, (hes talking about God’s plan and His LOVE) I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. ” Ephesians 3:14-17 NLT
